FR 9 FEBRUARY: STREETPERFORMANCE, BLOK BETON (COOLSTOF)

This season you will come across even more art in the Cool district. In addition to the weekly Kunstavonden (‘Arts Evenings’) which give you free admission to the contemporary arts institutes in Rotterdam’s arts quarter every Friday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., there will also be a lot happening outdoors on the street. The performance Blok Beton (Concrete Block) by Maurice Meewisse addresses people’s need to invest their labour in something that has utility or meaning. Physical work is the source of inspiration for Meewisse’s projects. During the performance Meewisse concentrates on the mixing and pouring of concrete in a mould. Sounds made in this process, such as the noise of the cement machine, the wheelbarrow and the dumping of cement, will be sampled on the spot by sound artist Jordy Walker. The strenuous work will be celebrated with a winter party with winter refreshments. On February 11 at 14:00, Meewisse will remove the concrete from its mould. The say over what should happen to the object will be given to a neighbourhood representative.
